War in the Poppy Fields
January 19, 2007

It is spotless practice lineage;
dissection of the promise land

the stressing of a long chord
on a taxed harmonic instrument,
like gin and caffeine
goes straight to your head.

It means
war in the poppy fields—
a long scramble upstairs
to the throne of an
abandoned hedonism:
              —City
       (A term first used for any settlement
       Regardless of its size.)

Up to their necks in scripture,
continuous enjambment

in darkest hours they supplicate for darkness;
blind to optimism as well.

Then it is the moment to stumble anew.
Home is indium,
taut as in another skin yet
oddly malleable.
